Why You Should Get the Flu Shot

As the colder weather and autumn leaves roll in, so does the flu virus. It’s a good idea for everyone 6 months and older (with rare exceptions) to get a flu shot to help protect themselves this flu season, especially those with complex health conditions and weakened immune systems.
Certain illnesses, medications, or conditions like cancer or HIV/AIDS can weaken a person’s immune system. Since their bodies have a harder time fighting off infections, they are at greater risk of serious health complications if they catch the flu. This can lead to severe illness and hospitalization.
The flu spreads easily through droplets when someone with the flu coughs, sneezes, or talks. The flu shot helps the body create antibodies to help fight off the virus.
Individuals with chronic health conditions might need a special high-dose flu vaccine. This is because their immune systems may not respond as well to regular vaccines.
